Borrowing Basics


How to borrow

Borrow items using the Borrow option on Self-Service Kiosks at Mile End and Whitechapel libraries.

You will need your College ID/Library card.

The number of items you can borrow

The overall limits for borrowing are:

  • 12 items for undergraduates and associate students
  • 16 items for taught postgraduates
  • 20 items for research postgraduates and staff
  • 6 items for interrupting students, eligible external borrowers and NHS library users

Within these overall limits, there are smaller limits for various categories of material, as shown in the following table.

How long you can keep a book

 

Undergraduates, Taught Postgraduates, and non-QM borrowers

Postgraduate Researchers and Staff

Ordinary Loans

4 weeks during term, or extended loans during vacations (may be recalled if reserved)

4 monthsor 4 weeks for medicine and dentistry staff and researchers  (may be recalled if reserved) 

One Week Loans

1 week during term, or extended loans during vacations

One Day Loan

Due back at any time up to midnight on the day after borrowing (or on Monday for items borrowed on Friday or Saturday).

Courtesy notices

We will send you an email notice the day before your loans are due for return to remind you. You can then renew your items online immediately or return them promptly to avoid fines.

Please note that we send these notices as a courtesy only. It is your responsibility to check the due dates of all your loans.

Recalls

Items may be recalled if a hold is placed on them.  Recalled items must be returned within seven days of a recall or fines will be payable.

Please note that if you are away from University:

  • Responsibility for items on loan to you includes those times when you are at home, away on placements, vacations, work experience, etc.;
  • You must always be able to return items that are required by other users;
  • Fines will continue to be charged if books are not renewed on or before the due date.
