CHRONOLOGY OF QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

1989

Incorporation with Westfield College took place, and established Queen Mary and Westfield College.

1989

Pre-Clinical teaching at the 2 colleges merged, and the basic medical sciences building was opened on the Queen Mary campus.

1990

The London Hospital marked its 250 year, and became The Royal London Hospital.

1992

The Tomlinson Committee Report was published. It was a report of an Inquiry into London’s Health Service, medical education and research, and was presented to the Secretaries of State for Health and Education by Sir Bernard Tomlinson on 15 October 1992. The remit of the inquiry was to advise on the organisation of and inter-relationships between the National Health Service and medical education and research in London. The report recommended that The London Hospital College of Medicine and Dentistry and St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College merged with Queen Mary and Westfield College, forming a large multi-faculty institution.

1992

Barts and The London Hospitals and their medical and dental schools merged forming Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

1995

Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry merged with Queen Mary and Westfield College.

1998-2008

1998-2008, Professor Adrian Smith was Principal of Queen Mary and Westfield College.

2000

The College adopted the working name Queen Mary, University of London, and retained its legal title of Queen Mary and Westfield College.

2004

The Westfield Student Village was opened on the Mile End Campus.

2005

The Blizard Building, home to the Medical School’s Institute of Cell and Molecular Science opened in Whitechapel.

2006

The Octagon, the original library of the People’s Palace, reopened after refurbishment.

2007

The Women at Queen Mary Exhibition was staged in the Octagon, marking 125 years of Westfield College and 120 years of Queen Mary College.

2008

Queen Mary, University of London was ranked 13th out of 132 UK Higher Education Institutions by the Times Higher Education as a result of the 2008 RAE results.

2009

The Westfield Trust was closed.

2008-2009

Professor Philip Ogden became Acting Principal of Queen Mary, University of London.

2009

Professor Simon Gaskell became Principal of Queen Mary, University of London.

2013

The College became legally known as Queen Mary University of London and gained degree awarding powers.
